Hydrogen is widely expected to play a huge part in a low-carbon future. Reuters Plus talks with Matthew Knight, Head of Market and Government Affairs at Siemens Energy UK, to explore the challenges of affordability, scalability, and safety in making hydrogen the clean energy of tomorrow. "As the industry grows, as the costs come down – which they surely will just as they did with batteries and wind turbines – it will open up new use cases and more customers will be able to afford hydrogen," says Knight. Can Toyota save the combustion engine by using liquid hydrogen? Subscribe to Engineering Explained for more videos! - 🤍 Recommended Books & Car Products - 🤍 EE Shirts! - 🤍 Toyota surprised me once again, announcing they've raced with liquid nitrogen in the Fuji 24 Hour race, accomplishing what they claim is the first for any manufacturer. No one has raced with liquid hydrogen! The technology is awesome, as it allows for a lot more hydrogen storage versus gaseous hydrogen (stored at 700 bar). Here, the low pressure liquid must be kept at -253ºC, however, which is quite a challenge. According to Toyota, this project had three main challenges: 1. Keeping the liquid hydrogen at a very low temperature. 2. Maintaining the efficiency and capacity of the fuel pump. 3. Controlling the pumped liquid hydrogen, as it converts to gas. We'll also discuss another issue that exist with hydrogen, which is how much space it takes up, despite having a better energy density by mass than gasoline. Unfortunately, the energy density by volume is quite a different story. Check out the video to see if this technology is worth the hype! Hydrogen is a clean-burning molecule, meaning that it can help to decarbonize a range of sectors that have proved hard to clean up in the past. But today, most hydrogen is produced from CO2-emitting fossil fuels. Hydrogen produced from renewable electricity, known as green hydrogen, could be the solution to cutting our carbon footprint. But first, it must overcome a number of challenges. » Subscribe to CNBC: 🤍 » Subscribe to CNBC TV: 🤍 » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: 🤍 About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Green hydrogen produces zero emissions and many believe it holds the key to limiting global warming. So is it the big hope for the future or a multi-billion euro mistake? Many believe green hydrogen could provide a miracle solution for countries around the world seeking to decarbonize their economies. But the technology is still in its infancy. Generating sufficient quantities of green hydrogen would require a lot more renewable energy than is currently available. Right now, almost all hydrogen is produced using natural gas in a process that generates large amounts of carbon dioxide. Green hydrogen, by contrast, is climate neutral. It's derived using renewable energy. The principle itself is not new but has, at yet, only found limited usage. Engineers at the German Aerospace Center are now working with the world's largest artificial sun to try to produce hydrogen without any electricity at all, using only light. If they can succeed, it would allow large-scale production of this valuable gas in countries that receive a lot of sunshine. Hydrogen is already being used as a fuel for buses, trains and cars, with hydrogen-powered planes due to follow shortly. Hydrogen is even the fuel of choice for space rockets, and German submarines glide along almost in silence thanks to hydrogen fuel cells. Manufacturers of airplanes, trucks, and even steel are investing millions in the technology, hoping that hydrogen will be the go-to fuel of a climate-neutral future. But critics warn of major challenges ahead, saying billions stand to be wasted. #dwdocumentary #freedocumentary #climate DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. During a recent interview, the CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, spoke candidly about the topic of hydrogen cars, aiming to dispel common misconceptions and shed light on Ford's perspective regarding their role in the future of transportation. Farley emphasized that while electric vehicles have gained significant traction and represent a viable solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it is important not to overlook the potential of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Farley highlighted several crucial points that provide valuable insights into the potential of hydrogen cars. One of the primary concerns often associated with EVs is their limited range and the time required for recharging. In this regard, the Ford CEO pointed out that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer a notable advantage in terms of both range and refueling speed. Hydrogen is a gas at room temperature, and is the first element in the periodic table. It has the chemical symbol H, but is usually found as a diatomic molecule of H2. It reacts with oxygen to form water. Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless gas that burns and can form an explosive mixture with air. It is the least dense gas known to man. A jet of hydrogen burns in air with a very hot blue flame. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It is found most abundantly on Earth in water, but can also be found in the atmosphere in very small amounts. When reactive metals like sodium come into contact with water Hydrogen gas is released. The test for hydrogen is that when a test tube containing hydrogen is placed near a flame it ignites with a “ squeaky Pop”. All metals above Hydrogen in the reactivity series react with acids to displace hydrogen. Hydrogen combines with nitrogen to form ammonia. In this video we look at several electrolysis designs and their function. Check out this video's sponsor, MEL Physics! Use the promo code "nighthawk" for 50% your first set of experiments: 🤍 Most DC power supplies will work adequately well for electrolysis, the most common of which is a 12v battery charger or a car battery itself. For more control it is best to use an adjustable power supply. Here is an affiliate link where you can purchase a similar 30v 10a power supply as I use in this video: 🤍 The last design shown in this video for a combined output HHO fuel cell I first stumbled on here: 🤍 After filming this video I realized that the plastic bottles I used for several of my designs had become quite brittle, and found research showing that hydroxide solutions are known to be quite damaging to plastics: 🤍 I did not notice increased brittleness in the clear plastic container of my final split electrolysis design, but the plastic is much thicker and so it may take longer to show weakness. A suitable precaution to give the cell the longest life may be to empty it of electrolyte while in storage. The stakes couldn't be higher. The Inflation Reduction Act launched a market for green hydrogen. But more than a year later the Treasury Department is still working out the details for critical tax incentives. The delay has provided room for a multi-million-dollar battle to flare up between trade groups and environmentalists. And nothing less than a pillar to achieving the Biden administration's ambitious climate goals hangs in the balance. Episode 60 of the Factor This! podcast features Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, which wants to become the everything green hydrogen company, from manufacturing electrolyzers, to producing, storing, and transporting green hydrogen itself. Marsh believes the U.S. could become a green hydrogen superpower. Or it could squander the opportunity of a lifetime. That's all next on Factor This!
